Hello and welcome. I’m J. Brummet, an author, wanderer, listener, and lifelong student of story and spirit.

If you’ve landed here, perhaps you’re also someone who believes that stories can carry us across landscapes of time and meaning. My debut novel, Beware of the Wind and the Darkness, follows a young man’s journey through Navajo land and legend. Though fictional, his path echoes one I walked myself four decades ago, a transformative journey through the sacred terrain of the American Southwest that left a lasting imprint on my soul.

Before I became an author, I spent years providing equine therapy for children with disabilities. In that space, I witnessed extraordinary transformations. Horses taught me something essential: happens when we listen, rather than push.

This is a lesson I carry into writing and into life.

We are often taught to strive harder. Speak louder. Do more. But what if the deeper answers come when we slow down, soften up, and pay attention? I’ve found that real insight often comes not with a roar, but with a whisper; even when you’re walking through grief, grappling with uncertainty, or simply standing at a threshold in your life, this can apply.

This space is where I’ll be sharing more: reflections on the writing process, the quiet wisdom of horses, the beauty and resilience of Navajo culture, and the healing power of land and language.

A portion of my book’s proceeds will go to causes that support the Navajo people, a small offering of gratitude for the immense inspiration and generosity I’ve received from their land and legacy.
